Mathematics Anxiety (Part 2)

An attitude of learning math helps students to know and develop self-assurance in their skill and performance in math. Students should eliminate some myths about math like high-level math is difficult or men are better than women in math. Gender has an influence on math anxiety. Some findings prove males have higher math anxiety than females until junior high school. Even though females can do arithmetic math better than males, boys tend to show the advantages of math achievements. Journal writing helps students understanding math concepts and allows them to share their feelings and experiences with math (Furner). Researchers recommend that students should practice math daily and study new techniques. Students must study in a place with less stress and learn math in an individual style. If the students need extra help, it is better to use tutors or others rather than their teachers or classmates. Also, some relaxation techniques such as positive messages reduce math anxiety in the students (Blazer).

Fear of math can transfer to the next generation. Parents’ role is important to change attitudes toward math. Family Math Nights mean a family can do mathematics together and is a way to bring families to the classrooms of their children. Parents learn about approaches to learning math and problem-solving. They should seek positive ways to support their children and teachers (Furner). Parents help children to believe they can succeed in doing the math and have the confidence to prevent math anxiety from occurring in the student. Then, the students love math and math will be their favorite subject. Parents could support and encourage their children and improve their confidence to succeed at math. Parents should monitor their children’s progress in math and have a realistic expectation of their children (Blazer).

Policymakers and designers of the curriculum should help to reduce math anxiety and increase the number of STEM teachers and students. In 2012, U.S. students ranked 20th and 27th in science and math in the world among their peers. President Obama set a plan for 100,000 new STEMs in 10 years (100K in 10) in 2011 to improve teaching math, develop and recruit teachers. The teachers would receive training in math anxiety to help students and the next generation would have a positive attitude in math (Beilock).

The findings prove math anxiety is related to different factors. There are some differences between math anxiety and general anxiety. Intelligence is not related to math anxiety. Math anxiety has a negative relationship with performance and competence, and it is not universal. Also, the reason for lower performance in math is that people are in the higher level of math anxiety. Attitude has a major role that causes people to avoid math. Recognizing math anxiety effects how quickly people can do the math, especially when basic math involved borrowing or carrying. Also, the cognition is dependent on working memory and motivation. A combination of various factors such as learning experience, biological talent, and attention toward math also, have influence in math anxiety (Ashcraft).

Different levels of math anxiety effect on students’ motivation and achievement in matriculation. Engineering students try to expand their acquaintance and learning in the math area, but they have negative attitudes toward math in the higher grades. Students with high motivation desire to do problem-solving, and they have low levels of math anxiety. (Zakaria).

In mathematics education, math anxiety plays an important role in learning math that cannot be ignored. The functions of teachers, parents, and students are helping to reduce math anxiety. They should find a way to have better math skills. Researchers emphasize to the general public that success in math is not related to math knowledge and concepts but also, people need to right mindset (Beilock). Including the development of teaching techniques, the description of math concepts in real life, and raise the student’s confidence to enjoy math.

Mathematics Anxiety (Part 1)

Mathematics is one of the important parts of life. If people know more math, they can exploit a variety of personal and professional situations. Many students have a problem with math and believe math is unimportant and boring. The students think math is difficult and harder than other subjects. In 2005, Gallup conducted a poll that asked students to answer the question, what is the most difficult subject in school? Obviously, mathematics was in the top rank of subjects. The United States has a lack of graduates in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) (Beilock). The U.S. government increased the number of permissions for individuals who work in the technology field. Although many believe that learning mathematics is hard, and students have some difficulties, however, students enjoy math with removing math anxiety. Math anxiety disappears by increasing prior knowledge of students, improving the teaching methods, helping the student to fall in love math, explaining applications of math that connect in real life, increasing confidence in their ability to solve math.

Researchers focus on math anxiety. Math anxiety is: “… a feeling of tension and anxiety that interfere with the manipulation of numbers and the solving of mathematical problems in a wide variety of ordinary life and academic situation” (Ashcraft). Most American people experience different levels of math anxiety at any age. Math anxiety has some physical, psychological, and behavioral symptoms such as increased heart rate, inability to concentrate, disgrace, avoidance of math class and not studying regularly.

Math anxiety is not low ability in math, it means people with poor math skills feel anxiety about math. When people want to do the math, they are afraid, and it causes prevention of using math knowledge. Math anxiety causes poor math performance and achievement. Also, students avoid math, math processing, and math-related careers. Researchers believe some strategies help people prevent or reduce math anxiety and improve students’ ability and achievement.

Math anxiety is a complicated issue. Educators, politicians, parents, and others are looking for some reasons to reduce the weakness of math skills. The causes of math anxiety vary from the influence of teachers and the school system, students’ attitudes, and parents’ backgrounds. Principals or other administrations have the main role in the school. They lead teachers, students, and parents in the same goal. Teaching techniques and poor math instruction are factors related to the teachers. Teachers should use different methods to prevent math anxiety, such as using technology, techniques of estimation, the group working, self-evaluation of one’s learning, and the discussing math feelings. Teachers must emphasize thinking methods rather than drills and practice to memorize the formulas. Also, they should support approaches to problem-solving rather than just result. Math educators need training, development of their math skills and positive attitudes in math. The teachers could link math in a student’s life and explain the application of math everywhere like welfare, business, and the grocery store. This way helps students to realize that math is an important tool. Teachers should encourage students, and never punish them. Also, instructors should tell the students that everyone makes mistakes in math.

The Best Strategies For Math Tutoring Online
